The Revitalization of the Indiana Theater

The Indiana Theater has been under new management since January of 2013 and has been in the process of revitalization. According to its new management, "The Indiana Theater strives to offer quality music and cinema productions." The Indiana Theater has a big potential to become the center of the Indiana Cultural District. Locals who have used The Indiana Theater as a venue for community events, or have attended live music shows have expressed positive experiences. There is a wide-spread hope that the Indiana Theater will be more widely utilized by the community and that it will be an avenue to expand the local music scene.

“The theater has been a part of Indiana's history for a long time. Also, it is a big part of every town, to have a notable local theater.” – Sean Howard, General Manager of the Indiana Theater and The Brown Hotel

"It's an awesome, downtown historic space open to community events. I don't know why we're not using it all the time!” – Gerald Smith, Center for Community Growth

“I think it is a culturally significant site because it acts as a venue for community based (rather than mass media/corporate based) performances, film, theater, music and meetings. By doing so people are able to make a public connection with one another rather than staying at home looking at their computers or smart phones. It provides a space in the heart of downtown Indiana for people to make direct contact with their neighbors – Dr. Jim Dougherty PhD, IUP Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology; Director for the Center for Northern Appalachian Studies.

“My overall experience has been pretty good. There have been decent turnouts and the sound has been great……It's part of what makes downtown feel like downtown.” – Brandon Dunlap, from the local band William Forest

"It’s a great thing for a small town like this to have such an ideal place to watch and play live music. It’s a great opportunity for local musicians such as myself to play and to not use it would be a shame." – Sam Cope, from the local band William Forest

“I'd say as a musician I feel it is a great opportunity for this town to have a legitimate music venue. However this town has to want the music scene which I sometimes feel like it doesn't. As a community we definitely could make it something amazing.” – Brendon Cope, from the local band William Forest

"It's nice to have a venue in Indiana that we can call our own. It's a great place to play or attend a show, and it really houses a lot of local talent." - Gabe Wolford, Local Solo Musician
